San Jose del Cabo Fishing Log — July 20–26, 2026

Offshore Yellowfin Tuna, Blue Marlin and Approaching Storm Conditions

Fishing around San Jose del Cabo remained challenging but offered offshore opportunities during July 20–26, 2026. Yellowfin tuna, blue marlin, occasional dorado and wahoo were reported across the fishing grounds, while shark activity continued to interfere with some nearshore efforts.

The week ended with increasing concern over Hurricane Genevieve, as local authorities announced a port closure for Sunday evening, July 26.

Weather and Ocean Conditions

Summer conditions around Los Cabos remained warm and humid, with tropical weather developing in the Pacific.

By July 26, Hurricane Genevieve was located approximately 520 miles southwest of Los Cabos. Although the storm was forecast to move westward without directly striking the area, increasing swell and potentially stronger winds were expected.

Local port authorities announced that the port would close at 10 p.m. on Sunday, July 26, because of the approaching marine conditions.

The available reports did not provide a verified water-temperature reading specifically for July 20–26.

Yellowfin Tuna — Outer Gordo and Offshore Banks

Offshore yellowfin tuna remained one of the main fishing targets, although locating feeding schools was unpredictable.

On Saturday, July 25, porpoise schools were reported approximately two miles south of Outer Gordo. Yellowfin tuna weighing around 50–70 pounds were present, but the fish were selective and did not always commit to live caballito bait.

On Sunday, July 26, the search extended farther offshore toward the 1150 Bank. Regional reports described isolated yellowfin tuna around 60 pounds caught during outings reaching approximately 30–38 miles offshore.

These longer runs produced inconsistent results, making offshore tuna fishing a challenging option rather than a guaranteed opportunity.

Blue Marlin, Dorado and Wahoo

Blue marlin continued to provide offshore fishing opportunities during the latter part of July.

Regional observations from July 23–26 described blue marlin encounters, with most fish estimated below 300 pounds. Trolling artificial lures and rigged ballyhoo were among the techniques used.

Dorado and wahoo were also encountered while searching offshore, although reported catches were limited.

Between Vinorama and Cardon, trolling ballyhoo and diving lures occasionally produced opportunities for dorado and wahoo, but consistent action remained difficult to find.

Inshore Fishing — Roosterfish and Shark Activity

Closer to shore, fishing conditions remained mixed.

Roosterfish activity continued along the hotel corridor and the shorelines around Punta Gorda, Zacatitos and La Laguna.

Around Vinorama, San Luis and Iman Bank, shark activity continued to interfere with fishing. Some tuna hookups were lost to sharks, reducing the effectiveness of fishing these grounds.

Bottom-fishing opportunities were also limited, with the broader July 13–22 regional report describing occasional dogtooth snapper around Inner Gordo.

Fishing Conditions Summary

  • Outer Gordo: Yellowfin tuna around 50–70 pounds reported on July 25, with an inconsistent bite.

  • 1150 Bank offshore area: Isolated yellowfin tuna around 60 pounds reported on July 26.

  • Offshore waters: Blue marlin encounters, with most reported fish below 300 pounds.

  • Vinorama to Cardon: Occasional dorado and wahoo opportunities while trolling.

  • San Luis and Iman: Shark interference continued to affect fishing efforts.

  • Hotel corridor, Punta Gorda and Zacatitos: Roosterfish activity remained available.

  • Weather: Hurricane Genevieve brought increasing swell concerns and an announced port closure for July 26.

Fishing Outlook

As July 2026 approached its final days, offshore fishing opportunities remained highly dependent on finding active bait and feeding fish.

However, the immediate priority became marine safety as Hurricane Genevieve approached the region.

The announced port closure and changing ocean conditions highlighted the importance of checking official port notices before planning any fishing departure.
