Iman Bank Fishing Guide — San Jose del Cabo
Explore Iman Bank fishing near San Jose del Cabo, from yellowfin tuna and wahoo to snapper and grouper. Discover regional catch history, fishing techniques, seasonal conditions and how to plan a private charter from Puerto Los Cabos Marina.
Iman Bank is one of the most versatile fishing grounds accessible from San Jose del Cabo, offering opportunities for yellowfin tuna, wahoo, dorado and a variety of bottom-dwelling species. But the best reason to fish Iman Bank is not that it produces the same fish every day — it is the variety of fishing options its structure can provide.
Located northeast of Puerto Los Cabos Marina, Iman Bank is an offshore underwater high spot in the Sea of Cortez. Its rocky structure and surrounding deeper water attract baitfish and seasonal game fish.
At Exotic Fish Cabo, we believe the right fishing destination depends on actual ocean conditions, your preferred species and the latest regional fishing activity — not simply the reputation of a particular fishing bank.
This guide explains what makes Iman Bank special, the species reported in its waters, how fishing conditions change throughout the year and what to consider when planning a private charter.
Where Is Iman Bank in San Jose del Cabo?
Iman Bank is located northeast of Puerto Los Cabos Marina, beyond the better-known Inner and Outer Gordo Banks.
It is approximately 13–15 miles from the marina, with travel often taking around an hour, depending on sea conditions, the route and the type of fishing charter.
Unlike an ordinary stretch of open water, Iman Bank is an underwater high spot surrounded by deeper water.
Its structure influences local fishing opportunities by creating areas where baitfish and larger predators may concentrate.
The fishing grounds northeast of San Jose del Cabo include several notable locations:
Iman Bank: Yellowfin tuna, wahoo and mixed bottom-fishing opportunities.
San Luis Bank: Rocky structure associated with snapper, grouper and other bottom species.
La Fortuna: Another productive fishing area when conditions favor tuna, wahoo or bottom fishing.
Inner and Outer Gordo Banks: Established grounds for yellowfin tuna, billfish and other seasonal game fish.
Vinorama: An additional area frequently mentioned in regional yellowfin tuna reports.
These fishing locations do not produce identical results every day.
Currents, baitfish availability, water clarity, wind and fishing pressure can make one area significantly more productive than another.
What Fish Can You Catch at Iman Bank?
Yellowfin Tuna — A Major Iman Bank Target
Yellowfin tuna are among the principal species associated with Iman Bank.
Historical regional fishing reports document yellowfin tuna activity at Iman during different parts of the year, including spring and fall.
Fish sizes have varied considerably between reporting periods.
For example, an April 2026 regional report described yellowfin tuna around Iman averaging approximately 20–30 pounds, with some larger fish weighing 60–70 pounds.
A September 2024 report documented yellowfin tuna near Iman weighing up to approximately 70 pounds, alongside much smaller fish.
Other historical reports describe tuna exceeding 100 pounds in the Iman area.
These examples demonstrate the potential of the fishing grounds, but they should not be interpreted as expected daily catches.
The tuna bite can be unpredictable. Fish may be present without feeding aggressively, and sharks or sea lions can interfere with hooked tuna.
Successful fishing often depends on finding the right bait and adapting to what the fish are responding to that day.
Wahoo — Fast Action Along the Fishing Grounds
Wahoo are another exciting species associated with Iman Bank and neighboring fishing areas.
Historical regional reports document successful wahoo fishing along the high spots between Iman and La Fortuna.
Trolling diving lures or rigged ballyhoo has produced wahoo encounters, particularly when ocean conditions and fish activity are favorable.
The October 2020 regional report described wahoo weighing up to approximately 40 pounds around these fishing grounds.
Reports from September 2025 also documented wahoo catches across the Iman, La Fortuna and nearby areas
